Today Lake Hodges Dam was dry for this time of year, but the lake was beautiful and San Diego skies were bright blue… temperatures in mid 70's. Nice day for nature hike.
Hodges Reservoir is located approximately 31 miles north of San Diego, on the San Dieguito River, which enters the ocean at Del Mar.
The dirt hiking and riding trails around much of the lake wind through ever-changing terrain and biological settings which include streams, lush river valleys, canopied oak forests, arid rocky terrain and open fields. The topography changes from elevated vistas to marsh-like wetlands. There are accessible staging areas at five locations along the seven mile primary route.

Lake Hodges is ordinarily a reasonably waterless place; the month with most of the rain is January, and July on the other hand is the driest. You're sure to run into some nice people from San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos here; Los Penasquitos Creek is a splendid whitewater spot nearby. Hodges Dam is a gorgeous place, absolutely worth stopping at.
